Having lived near downtown Los Angeles for the past year, I have had the pleasure of getting to know a completely different area of this beautiful place I call home. I lived on what we Los Angelenos call the "Westside" for almost six years before making the move, but have grown to love it! Incredible architecture, cool restaurants, and so much stuff to do.
From the Inn at Playa del Rey, the drive differs depending on traffic, anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. Otherwise, you grab a day pass with our Metro system and take the Expo Line from Culver City to get to Downtown LA in just about thirty minutes.
Griffin's Top Ten Downtown LA:
1) Bar AMA:
Make your way to one of my favorite places to eat, Bar Ama. They have an incredible Tex-Mex cuisine and a bar if you're just looking to get a drink. Be sure to try the queso dip and breakfast tacos. My mouth is watering just thinking about it...
2) Grand Central Market
If you're looking for a spattering of different places to eat, try the Grand Central Market. Also great if you're looking to cook because they have just about anything you could want and then some! Seafood, and ice cream, and jewelry, and oh my!
3) Angel's Flight
Take the Angel's Flight for a fun, albeit short trip, up to the top of the hill and get a great view of our beautiful Downtown. If you've seen 500 Days of Summer (if you love the movie, check out this website to check out all the local places from the film), you can make it to the same park from there!
Just celebrated my birthday at perch la for a beautiful view of Downtown from this beautiful rooftop bar. Hint: At 6 pm, make the trek up the very top floor for a beautiful lounge area.
5) Pershing Square Farmer's Market
Every Wednesday, Pershing Square is laden with lots of great food and vendors for its weekly Farmer's Market. Check it out for my favorite El Salvadorean PUPUSAS!
6) Pershing Square Ice Skating
If you're in LA during the winter, be sure to stop for some ice skating at Pershing Square at Downtown on Ice. Who doesn't love a great skate in the beautiful LA sun?
7) Los Angeles Central Library
Want to step away from the hustle and bustle of busy downtown? Head to the Central Library. Want to learn more about the beautiful architecture and art? Be sure to take a docent tour, just ask the librarian!
8) Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels
Religious or not, this is a stunning display of architecture and a historic landmark in the City of Angels.
9) Grand Park
With LA's year round beautiful weather, children and adults alike will enjoy the fountains at Grand Park... Let your inner child out or bring your dog and enjoy running through the water!
10) Olvera Street
You'll feel like you're in Little Mexico. Great for food and just shopping around. Incredible history and so much culture, a must see. It's also just down the street from Union Station, which if I was doing my top 11, might have made it on the list....
So you're off, enjoy beautiful DTLA and when you're done, we'll have fresh warm chocolate chip cookies waiting for you upon your arrival...
If you're looking for meat, I'm sure it exists... this girl however is a vegetarian :).
Another walking tour is here and has some of our other favorite things to do while perusing Downtown LA.
