Our Beautiful "Backyard" - aka Open Space in Los Angeles

Many of our guests wonder about the Inn at Playa del Rey's "backyard", the Ballona Wetlands. This 600 acre nature preserve is the last of its kind in Southern California and there are several groups working on its preservation.

While unescorted entrance to the Wetlands is prohibited during the restoration process, you do have a few opportunities a month to go out with a guide:

Friends of Ballona offer a free tour on the second Sunday of each month from 1-3pm. You are also welcome to explore on your own at their monthly Open House, hosted on the second Saturday of each month from 2-4pm. A public restoration day is held on the fourth Saturday of each month from 9am-12noon; you'll get hands-on experience while learning about wetlands ecology. All of the Friends of Ballona events are free, though you are encouraged to make a donation.

The Los Angeles Chapter of the Audubon Society invites the public to join them on the third Saturday of every month for a free bird walk from 8am-12noon.

You can always enjoy a beautiful view of the Wetlands from the Inn's balconies. Relax on your private balcony in one of our rooms that face the Wetlands, or from the Inn's living room.

On a clear day, you can see the Santa Monica Mountains, the San Gabriel Mountains, the San Bernardino Mountains and the Hollywood Hills and Hollywood sign. It's spectacular!

Private tours for groups of 10 or more can be arranged through the Inn and the Friends of Ballona. Please ask one of our staff if you need more information.

Enjoy the natural beauty of Los Angeles from Playa del Rey!
